The American Vice President JD Vance will join his wife Ush in a trip to Greenland on Friday, a visit that follows the threats of Donald Trump to take over the island.
The couple will go to Pituffik space database to receive briefing on arctic safety issues and familiar with the members of the US forces stationed there, towards the White House.
Usha Vance planned to travel to Danish territory on a cultural visit before her husband announced his plans. Trump’s National Safety Advisor Mike Waltz is also located visiting this week on a separate journey.
Greenland officials fiercely criticized the planned visits as disrespect.
Greenland – the largest world island, located between the Arctic and Atlantic Ocean – was controlled by Denmark, almost 3,000 km (1,000 km), about 300 years.
He manages his own domestic affairs, but the decisions on external and defense policy are made in Copenhagen. The United States has long retained the security interest and military presence of the two world war.
Pituffik Space base, located in the northwest of Greenland, supports missile warning, air defense and space surveillance mission.
In the video published on the Social Network platform X, Vance said there was a lot of excitement around his wife’s travel in Greenland. She joins her because “he didn’t want to have all those fun.”
He said he visits the military installation to check for island security, as “a lot of other countries threatened Greenland, threatened to use his territories and waterways to jeopardize Canada, and of course to threaten the people of Greenland.”
He added that the Trump administration wants to “reinforce the safety of the people of Greenland”, and that the United States and Denmark ignored that for “far too long”.
It is unclear if Mike Waltz is still scheduled to visit. The BBC reached into the White House for Confirmation.
Dr. Dwayne Ryan Menezes, the founder and general manager of the Polar Research and Political Research Research Researcher, based in London, criticized the visit.
He said “very unusual” that the delegation of American high-level officials visited Greenland without a call, especially after the country’s national elections, where the parties are still in talks on the next government.
American interest in Greenland’s security, given his strategic significance, makes sense, he said. But he added that Washington DC “is inexplicable” that he took such an aggressive approach, especially in the light of Trump’s comments on the acquisition of the territory.
“Failure to follow the people Greenland said that we would get us” in this or other “unhindered and counterproductive as a tactic,” he added.
According to recent surveys, almost 80% of greenlander back independence from Denmark. But the investigation of the opinion in January suggested that the even more number of reject the idea of becoming part of the United States.
