On Friday, the new liberal president of South Korea announced his plans to end some military activities along its borders with North Korea and restore a military agreement 2018 with its neighbor in an attempt to reduce border tensions.

Speaking on the eighties of the liberation of Korea from the Japanese colonial rule, President Lee Jay Meong said that he would restore the comprehensive military agreement on September 19, a reduction between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and former liberal president in South Korea, Moon Jae In.

He told me during his speech: “Everyone knows that the hostility that has been dragging a long time benefits people in any of the Koreans.”

The agreement ended some military activities on the border between the two countries, including the establishment of buffer areas on the ground, the sea, and party areas above the border to prevent fighting. He also ended the military training near the border and removed some guard functions along the descending area.

The deal was signed at the Inter-Korean summit in 2018, but in the end it collapsed with border tensions.

He called on the North to respond to Seoul’s efforts to rebuild dialogue confidence and revive the dialogue, although how Pyongyang will respond is unclear.

“In particular, to prevent the accidental clashes between South and North Korea and build military confidence, we will take pre -emptive gradual steps to restore the military agreement on September 19.”
