New York State Prisons will release prisoners early because the system does not have enough customer for correction, week after the state is firing more than 2,000 guards who are on strike due to bad working conditions
Albows, N – New York State Close will release the prisoners early because the system does not have enough correction officers, weeks after the state fired more than 2,000 guards who are on strike due to bad working conditions.
In the Commissioner’s Memorandum, Commissioner Daniel Martoscello directed prison leaders to start identifying prisoners who were convicted of less crimes and already set for release within 15 to 110 days to be considered for early emptying.
Prisoners convicted of sexual crimes, violent crimes or serious crimes such as murder, terrorism and fire would not be eligible for early release, said state corrections.
Martoskullo wrote that early editions would appear “given the current personal crisis and in order to have an appropriate balance between the safety and well-being of those working and staying” in state prisons.
This move came after a widespread correction officer, who lasted 22 days and crippled the operations of the State Prison System. The state eventually fell more than 2,000 guards who refused to return to work after the state and the guard union reached the agreement to stop stopping work.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, Democrat, signed an executive order that prevents state agencies to hire guards firing due to the striking.
The Hochul spokeswoman said the governor supported Martoskull’s “efforts to safely address staff and staff disabilities” in the Tuesday statement.
