White smoke appeared from the chimney of the Sikstine Chapel, signaling that a new pope was elected to lead the Roman Catholic Church. The smoke indicates that the candidate provided two thirds of the majority – at least 89 out of 133 voting cardinals – during the secretarial conclap.
