French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Thursday that France will recognize Palestine as a country, amid global anger at people who are starving in Gaza.

Macron said in a mail On X it will make the official character of the decision of the United Nations General Assembly in September. “The urgent thing today is that the war in Gaza is stopping and that the civilian population is being rescued,” as published.

He said, “The Palestinian state in these circumstances will be a launching platform to inform Israel – we do not live in peace next to it. Let’s be clear: the Palestinians do not seek a state alongside Israel; they are looking for a state instead of Israel.”

The Israeli Foreign Ministry had no immediate comment.

France is the largest and strongest European country recognizing Palestine. More than 140 countries realize the Palestinian state, however, the United States is not among them.

France includes the largest number of Jewish population in Europe and the largest number of Muslim population in Western Europe, and fighting in the Middle East is often based on protests or other tensions in France.
