27. January 1996, CC Opanowski was alone from college in Hudson Falls, New York, House for his mother when her ex-boyfriend, Shawn Doyle, crashed on the door. Opanowski grew up with Doyle and went out in high school and her first year of college.

Once in, Opanowski says Doyle became violent. “He pushed me on the couch, began to hold me, curb me, shouting at me. And he picked me up and pushed me against the French door,” she says. Then she said, Doyle took scissors and cut off his horse. “He picked me up, held me and cut off my hair, just everything.”

“48 hours” correspondent Anne-Marie Green asks Opanowski: “How was your hair cut off this way?” Opanowski replies, “humiliating”. Green continues: “Do you think that’s why he did it?” Opanowski replies: “Probably. Just so I can handle somewhere.”

Opanowski says Doyle came in and out of violent rage, and at one point he held the throat scissors. “I thought he was going to stab me,” he says green.

For the first time, Opanowski shares his powerful story with “48 hours,” by the attack, her long healing road, and the forces that needed to face his attacker in court. Green reports on the case that stretches almost three decades in “Faced with a monster”, Saturday, Saturday, 10. May at 10 / 9C on CBS and streaming on Paramount.

Opanowski says she didn’t think it would make it alive to her college and close friend, Shannon McCauliffe, called. Doyle allowed Opanowski to answer the phone, but she says he watched her every move. “And by the grace of God, only in a few words, she (Shannon) gets out, based on the tone of my voice and how I answer, that it is there,” says Opanowski.

McCauliffe knew Doyle had a history of harassing Opanowski and feared her friend’s safety. She lowered the phone and called the police immediately. When the authorities arrived, Opanowski made it easier in the beginning. But she says that Hudson Falls police officers “did not put him (Doyle) in his handcuff … they put us in the back of the same police car.” In order for things to worsen, when they arrived at the police station instead of separating them, he says the police interviewed them together. Opanowski says she felt the police don’t take the thing seriously. “They made it as if it were some struggle between two small children, which turned around, a little dark,” Green says.

When “48 hours” reached for Hudson Falls Police Directorate, they acknowledged that the response to the law on domestic violence has developed in the last few decades for better work and victim support. Police arrested Doyle and accused him of threatening, harassment and offense. Eventually, he would plead guilty of threatening in the second degree and was convicted of three years of probation. Opanowski says she was terrified in Doyle. She transferred colleges and moved away from Hudson Falls.

Opanowski passed behind him until the summer of 2005. – nine years after the attack – when she learned that Doyle was arrested for killing a 33-year-old Lora Leonardo, young mothers two boys. Opanowski says, “I couldn’t believe what I heard … I felt about her whole family and her two little kids.”

Lori Leonard was in 2003. years met Doyle on the website to meet Cupid.com. She lived three hours from Doyle in Chitten, New York, a small town outside Syracuse. The older sister Lori Leonard, Jennifer Leonard, says that they were just about a short time due to Doyle’s violent temperament. Jennifer Leonard says, “I called her one night, and he was there, and everything I could hear in the background whether he shouted at her. And that was, what was this?”

Despite break up, Lori Leonard told Jennifer Leonard that they agreed to be friends and that Doyle is okay with that. Jennifer Leonard says she was skeptical. “And I was like, no, he didn’t. No. People like that aren’t just fine with friends,” she says.

29. April 2005, just a few days before Lori Leonard disappeared, Shawn Doyle helped the release into a new rental. Doyle offered the use of his truck. Jennifer Leonard says: “She asked a few people before that. He still played” I was your friend. But five days later, 4th. May, Lori Leonard left. Lori Leonard is planning to ride In Albany that day to pick up Yankees cards from someone who met at work. Afterwards, Jennifer Leonard has been going to go to voicemail. He thought it was weird. “Her phone never went straight to voicemail. Never been excluded. ”

Twenty-four hours later, when Lori Leonard never called or returned home, Jennifer Leonard called the Chittenango Police Department. Detective Wade Irwin searched his property for rent. There were no signs of interruption or that a crime was committed in the house. He said when they interviewed a man Lori Leonard should have met to get the Yankees cards from, Alibi signed out. When they talked to Doyle, says Irwin, “He just said all the time … he left, and she was alive in the apartment.”

Irwin says when they checked his alibi, they couldn’t clean it. Still, Doyle was cooperative, they even allowed investigators to search their truck and photograph. When they searched Doyl’s glove compartment, they found something curious: the key with the serial number on it. At that time, he meant nothing to investigators. But later it would become important in case.

24. July 2005, three months after Lori Leonard disappeared, there was a break in the case. Lori Leonard’s body was discovered in a metal box located in the channel channel champlain. Irwin says: “She was behind her back. Her feet were tied up, and the channel was in the chin. And then when the drainage cassette was removed, there was a bandan tied to her mouth.” Irwin says the investigation comes together quickly together and everything led to Shawn Doyle. The key found in Doyle gloves for gloves matched the toolbar of the tool, tying it directly into the crime. When the investigators searched Doyla residence, says Irwin that they found “similar handcuffs, bandans, cassettes and other funds used on Lori.” One day after the detection of Lori Leonard, Doyle was arrested and charged with the murder of the second degree.

23. January 2006 The Doyle trial began. District Breakfast Lawyer Washington Kevin Kevin Korstright says that he received Opanowski central to his case to testify. He says her testimony is important because “shows what he (Doyle) can … It’s his modus operandi. It’s strong evidence.” But Opanowski was not the only ex-girlfriend that Doyle attacked. Five years after Doyle attacked Opanowski, he allegedly tried to kill another young woman. The judge ruled both women can take the rack. Korstright says he decided to call Opanowski as his last witness. He says, “You always put the best best for the last.”

Opanowski bravely confronted his attacker after so many years and told the jury of the long-term mental anxiety, Doyle caused her. He says he is determined. “I need to make sure he’s delayed for the murder Lori,” she says. 26. January 2006, the jury returned with the verdict: Shawn Doyle was found guilty of killing another degree.

Opanowski says after all these years, it is still hard to process the fact that the person she used to love was for murder. He hopes others can learn from her story. He says, “Be awake. See what is happening in front of you and make sure someone knows. Pay attention and when you have that feeling, the one you don’t go with the most.”
