Transcript: Rep. Don Bacon on “Face the nation with Margaret Brennan”, 6. April 2025. Years star-news.press/wp

This is followed by the transcript of the interview with the tail. Don Bacon, the Republican Nebraska, who has arrived “the face of the nation with Margaret Brennan” 6. April 2025. Years.
Margaret Brennan: Let’s go to Nebraska now, Republic Congressman Don Bacon, who join us this morning from Omaha. Congressman, I have to withdraw a lot to numerous topics, but just to pick up the tariffs we talk about, I know you introduce the lawpiece lawpiece on what Senator Cantwell just betrayed. But as I understand, in the house, the republic leaders have already limited the ability to perform in change in Mexico, Canada and China. They turned on the language in continuous resolution. Does that get you on your way when you try to pull some Congress Tariff Controls now?
The tail. Don Bacon: Well, first of all, good morning, Margaret. Thanks for including me. And I enjoyed listening to Senator Cantwell. I support the legislation that Senator Grassley, Senator Cantwell, we have a total of seven republicans in the Senate, and I have some initial support on the side of the house, which we will present tomorrow. It will be harder to convey this in the house. No doubt. I think if we get 60 votes in the Senate, they will put pressure on the house to look at this. And if we continue to watch the stock market goes a certain direction, or if I see inflation or unemployment in a bad way, I think then this account becomes a very sustainable account. So it won’t be tomorrow, or maybe in the next few weeks, but it will be fine we can use and it’s time to renew the Congress its power here. And the Constitution is clear, the house and the Senate, Congress, has the power of tariffs and taxes and we gave part of that power executive, and I think it was a mistake.
Margaret Brennan: But I hear you say you have a momentum. Sincerely, sir, that the president talked all the time during the campaign on tariffs. He put them in the central part of his policy. He spoke about the days of glory in the 1800s and wanting to return to them. Were the Republicans off just seriously?
The tail. Bacon: There are several aspects of your question, Margaret. That is a good question. You are right, when you look back, these were tariffs that support Republican in 1800s and up to 1930. year when we passed a part of Smoot-Hartley who created one of the worst, the worst depression we have ever had. We have learned that tariffs and protectionism do not work, and that free trade in the end, as long as fair, we want fair trade. And I support the president who want to get correctness, so these countries are treated for us wrong, but fair trade should be a goal. And you’re right. The president talked about this. He didn’t hide because it’s part of his agenda. But here’s my download, and I studied politics since I was 13 years old. People voted for President Trump due to the border, and he really delivered there. And they voted for him because inflation surpassed the salary increases. Today they were poorer than four years ago. I really think that people voted for President Trump because of that, borders and perhaps crime, if they saw a crime in big cities. I don’t mean end – I don’t think they’re not tariffs really a big factor in making people’s decisions when it came to last November.
Margaret Brennan: Yes, I just … I know we surely covered them on this program, and that surprises me, or may not be, that the business community is currently such silent. As Senator Cantwell said, she said she was afraid. But there is a conservative group, a new covenant of civil liberties, which has filed a lawsuit to challenge these tariffs in court. Do you think that these are the courts in which it is in the end settlements?
The tail. Bacon: I think it is ultimately that the Congress is, after we see this enough, but maybe the courts. The Constitution makes a very clear Congress for Tax Control. And, by the way – and let’s be honest, tariffs are taxes. But they also mention the tariffs in the Constitution, and we gave president emergency powers. So, the courts will have to decide, what just happened? Are these urgent powers or is this total change in tariff policy? And I think that’s really a latter. Here, the Congress must come in and say, really want to create this new policy on tariffs? And if so, that should come from the congress, not the president.
Margaret Brennan: I also want to ask you about your work on the board of armed services. President Trump fired the first two officials at the forefront of a very powerful national security agency. It is one of the most powerful intelligence agencies we have. Collect information around the world through eavesdropping, signals intercepted and work with the army, with a cyber command. Did you receive any explanation of the Congress, which is General Haugh, a four-star generate unanimously confirmed to work, suddenly rejected?
The tail. Bacon: Margaret, I didn’t. But let me just comment on this. General Haugh is an absolute best leader in American soldiers to run Cyber Command and National Security Agency. He also ordered because half of the cyber command rely on the NSA to be effective in Cyber operations, so you must have this team. And he was in charge of both. He served 34 years in the military, and his whole career worked for intelligence or cyber surgery. Honestly, he is the best we had. And they also shot the number of two people at the National Security Agency without explanation. I’ll tell you, this brings us back. It hurts. I’ll tell you, Russia and China today we laugh at us because we just fired the absolute best leaders, the most qualified guys we spent three and a half decades preparing for this role, and he left. And that is heart attacked to see that this decision was made without an explanation, and they hurt us.
Margaret Brennan: And our reporting as a network has made a decision after the Oval Office with right-handed activists named Laura Loomer, which spread the theories of conspiracy around 11. September, anti-Muslim things, racist things. It also happened as at least six other officials of the National Security Council in the White House were fired at Laura Loomer. I wonder again, with respect, sir, the Republicans are in control. You have supervision. Will there be hearings about this? Are there other Republicans who are worried and that something will do about it?
The tail. Bacon: I’m sure there will be some supervision. I am Chairman of the Suboduction, so I guarantee you that we will have various military leaders, we will hear the Secretary of the Defense, and he will ask him about it …
Margaret Brennan: – Did he even know?
The tail. Bacon: I don’t know he knows, but we’ll find out when we ask him, and we’ll ask him. He will say that it is the president’s right, and the president has the constitutional right to do so, but does it make it suitable or okay? Maybe he has a constitutional government to do it, but does it really do that? And in the end I will clearly say that we just removed the most qualified soldier we had to lead the Cyber command and NSA, and we will ask about it. Now we have supervision, does not mean that we can, the president has a constitutional body to do so, but we have – we have the opportunity to wonder about this and wonder why. And I have a responsibility to say clearly that this is wrong. Injury us. It hurts on our country.
Margaret Brennan: Very fast. Do you think that is so that the president can share those two orders and put someone out of their own choice, the political ally, at the top of the NSA?
The tail. Bacon: You know it’s possible. I know she’s out there, but I’d say it’s a mistake. The NSA is very important for the Cyber command. You cannot create a cyber command without an entrance from the National Security Agency, Sigint. If you separate, put them under two different commands, then you will create a non-functional partnership and we will harm our cyber operations against China and Russia.
Margaret Brennan: Well, Congressman, we’d love to go back to another conversation about Cyber once. We have to leave him there. We’ll be back in a moment.
