If the U.S. Department of Education disappears, millions of students with disabilities will face even greater obstacles to obtaining education they deserve. They are our neighbors, classmates, friends and family members. When we rest for protection and resources that enable possible education, we do not let them down – we fail as society.
1971. year, before there were federal protection for people with disabilities, states were free to exclude children with disabilities from their public schools – and many are. Millions of children were rejected education, not because they could not learn, but because our society did not believe that it is worth being educated. Which has changed due to federal action. Parents, guided by my organization, onions, struggled in court and won. Their victory set the foundation for individuals with disabilities education law (idea), providing the right to free, appropriate public education for students with disabilities, regardless of the nature or seriousness of their disability.
Now access is the right in danger, and parents across the country are disturbed.
Calls for dismantling the American Ministry of Education began to appear on the main platforms, and members of the Congress openly advocate for his removal. This suggestion is not just a bureaucratic shift; It is an existential threat to students with disabilities and their families. Although the idea would remain the law, without federal surveillance, there would be few mechanisms to ensure that the countries follow.
When education is limited, so that the opportunity is. Without education, students with disabilities face higher rates of poverty, unemployment, bad healthand social insulation. Education is the foundation for independence, inclusion and future with elections. Remove it, and not only limiting potential – forcing millions of people in the life of barriers and difficulties.
This question is personal for me. As a former Deputy Secretary of Secretary at the Department of Special Education and Lifelong Proponent of Disability, I have seen first hand what happens when children with disabilities face barriers – and how the department of stepping.

Here’s the first life. A few years ago, parents in Texas revealed that the state has an unfair boundary of the number of children with disabilities that could receive special educational services. The cap is set to just 8.5 percent, though Almost 15 percent of students In most countries, it is eligible for these services. These interested parents appeared toward the Department of Education for Help. The staff of the department was closely collaborated with the state, leading them to what was supposed to be done to solve the problem. After multi-month cooperation, Texas removed the lid, ensuring that each child who qualifies for special education can now get the support they need.
The education department makes far more than providing support to state education departments. Funds Funds High-quality training for special education teachers, initiates innovation in how we educate students with disabilities, supports parents and implement the laws on disability rights. It also ensures that when students with disabilities are unable to access appropriate special education services, families have a way to struggle back. In fact, the largest category of complaints submitted to the Department for Education from parents of students who believe that children deny their education they need and deserve. In many cases, the Ministry of Education operates directly with school districts to address these issues and improving services.
What does this work mean for children with disabilities? Consider Whitman, 11-year-old with autism and apremium that is non-smoking and uses a augmentary communication device for communication. Support he receives special education, changes to life – not only for him, but for the whole family. At first he was housed in the school in which all children had a disability. He fought until the school started the program that helped Whitman learn in addition to his unsynsend peers. Now not just great excellent, it is already recently done in two school musicals – something that his family never imagined.
Decade ago, the United States decided to have a disability or life in a particular state should not determine whether the child receives quality education. That promise is now attacked. Dismantling Education Department would not just turn the hour – created a chaos and deepens inequality. This would mean less trained teachers, weaker implementation of disability rights and more children slide through cracks.
The role was never taller. If we allow the dismantling of the Department of Education, we have not just annulled decades of progress; We also risk that we give up the promise that every child deserves a chance to succeed. We can’t let that happen. Futures millions of students are in our hands – and we have to protect them.
